The Genoa-Kingston High School (GKHS) band program is gearing up for an amazing year with the highest participation numbers since before the pandemic. Under the leadership of Mr. Brian Drews, who is in his second year as director at GKHS, the program has experienced growth and success.
Last marching band season the band placed first in the Marengo Settlers Day parade for Drum Major and parade marching and received second in field competition. This was the highest they had placed since before COVID. Some other accomplishments include getting first at the Sycamore Pumpkin Parade, higher scores at the WIU Marching Band Classic, and establishing a strong presence at GK sporting events to support and build a strong community culture that GK is known for.
“Last year we were able to build strong marching fundamentals that transferred into our marching show. This year at band camp, we picked up right where we left off. We have many new students that have jumped in and are already putting in the work,” says Drews.
With a commitment to excellence and preparing students to excel, the GKHS band program continues to thrive into this year's marching band season with their show - The Beatles. They will be performing four pieces - Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Magical Mystery Tour and Lady Madonna.
The GKHS marching band will be competing in three different competitions. Some of those include the Marengo Settlers Day Parade, Western Illinois University Marching Classic and the Sycamore Pumpkin Parade. As they look towards the future, Mr. Drews and the GKHS band program remain focused on growing the program and empowering students to be proud of themselves while building a strong community culture.
