Due to the weather forecast for today and tomorrow (8/26/24 & 8/27/24), we will be taking every precaution to protect our students from the excessive heat and high heat index. We will be keeping students inside for recess and PE (during peak hours) today and tomorrow. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and has a refillable water bottle. The school has several bottle fillers for students to refill their bottles as needed.
When the heat index is high, there are several precautions you can take to keep kids safe during recess, including:
Limit outdoor time: Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, which are usually between 10 AM and 5 PM. You can also limit outdoor time on days when the heat index is 105°F or higher.
Stay hydrated: Make sure kids have access to water and take frequent sips throughout the day. You can also schedule water breaks every 15–30 minutes.
Stay cool: Use shade, tents, umbrellas, or awnings. You can also try water play, like using a hose with a sprinkle attachment.
Dress appropriately: Wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
Protect from the sun: Use hats and sunscreen.
Monitor for heat distress: If the heat index is high (80-89°F), watch kids for signs of heat distress and give them frequent water breaks.
High heat can cause children to become sick quickly, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke.
