5th Grade Newsletter - November

Wow!  This weather is crazy.  With the rain/snow mix, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for recess.

Reading  - We have complete Module A in unit 1 of our Readygen curriculum. Coming up in November in Reading and Language Arts, we will focus on narrative and informative texts.  The skills we will work on will be theme, comparing and contrasting characters and events, and quoting accurately from a text.  We are still working with small groups at the students’ reading levels and using these skills and strategies at the guided reading table. We have all incorporated 6 minutes solutions to work on the student’s fluency.

Math - In Math, the fifth graders are currently working on Topic 4, which is multiplying decimals.  Topic 5 and 6 will move us in long division. It is extremely important that the students know their multiplication facts at this point.  Long division will be frustrating for students without that foundation. Please continue working at home on Reflexmath.com to help with memorizing math facts.

Social Studies - In Social Studies, we are in chapters 8 and 9 that tell the events of the American Revolution. We will discuss the major battles of the American Revolution and then the process of writing the United States Constitution.  The students will be working on Google Classroom to submit different projects, graphic organizers, watch videos, and much more. It is a great experience using this technology!

Science - In Science, each classroom is working on Aquatic Ecosystems. We have created our ponds with fish, snails, black worms, daphnia, elodea, and dragonfly nymphs.  The students are observing the ponds and looking for behaviors and interactions between the organisms. We will be wrapping up this unit in the next few weeks. Our four units for the school year are Aquatic Ecosystems, Solar System, Matter, and Chemical Reactions.  Ask your child about their ponds!

We look forward to speaking with you about your child’s progress at our Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 6 and 7.  Wednesday, November 6 is early release at 1:45 and Thursday, November 7 is early release at 11:30. No school on November 8.

Thanks!
