5th Grade April Newsletter
Spring is almost here! Please make sure that as the weather warms up, school and homework is still the first priority. Also make sure that your child is dressed for recess weather. You never know with Illinois weather how hot or cold it will be! Here are the concepts that we will be working on in the coming month.
Reading
We are currently working on Unit 4 in our ReadyGen curriculum. This unit is social studies based. We have been reading books on exploration. The skills we will work on will be main idea and key details, theme, cause and effect, and finding text evidence to support a theme or main idea. We are also working on a narrative and then we will create another opinion essay. We continue to respond to text daily and support our ideas with text evidence. Please ask your child what they are learning about in ReadyGen.
Math
Fractions were the main focus of the third quarter. We are in our final topic on fractions where we will be dividing whole numbers by unit fractions. After we conclude fractions, we will explore volume, measurement, data and graphs, order of operations, and polygons. We will fit a lot of information in during the fourth quarter! Make sure your child is making any corrections and talking with his or her teacher if they are confused in math. Also, students can continue to work on Reflex at home to practice their multiplication and division facts.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we are in chapter 11, which covers the pioneers, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the expansion of our country. The students will be working on Google Classroom to submit different projects, graphic organizers, watch videos, and much more. We will finish the year with an introduction to the Civil War and also a novel study on the Holocaust and World War II.
Science
In Science, we are completing our next unit, which is the solar system. It goes along with unit 3 in our Readygen series.. We are learning about stars, planets, moon phases, and much more. The final units will be matter and chemical reactions. Ask your child what their favorite part of our science unit has been!
Please make sure your child continues to read each night for 20-30 minutes. Also, coming up is our Illinois Assessment of Readiness. These tests will be held on April 12, 13, and 14. We will have two tests each day. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats a healthy breakfast each morning before testing. Also, encourage them to do their best on these tests.
As always, thank you for your support at home!
